Maximiliano Centini about being an ECO chic salon

We recognise that human activity has an impact on the environment and climate change. For this reason we use the most environmentally friendly products on the market, take steps to reduce water & energy use and increase the amount we recycle. In addition, we use renewable electricity and have become carbon neutral. We believe this is not just good for the environment, but means our products and services look after our clients too.

Over the last 3 years we have been working toward making our business a fully “green” business. In May 2011 we have reached an important milestone with the introduction of products made with natural ingredients, Alterna Bamboo Range, Davines Authentic Range and Unite Eurotherapy in the hair salon, Jessica Cosmetics and Geleration for the nails which exclude chemicals and harmful ingredients such as Parabens, Phthalates, DEA, Synthetic Colours, Paraffin, Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP.

Here is a quick breakdown of the changes we undertook over the last 3 years:
2009-2010
We removed 95% of cotton towel in exchange for DISPOSABLE100% BIODEGRADABLEPLASTICFREE AND NON TOXIC TOWELS.
By doing this we stop washing over 400 cotton towels a week making a massive step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and we now recycle 90% of all waste generated in the salon.

We redesigned the salon lighting system, using only energy saving bulbs and ditched the single switch that illuminated the entire salon, to individual lamps that allow us to light up just the areas that are used, thus reducing the amount of electricity use daily.

On top of that, the team take part in the “switch off campaign” making sure lights are switched off if not used during the day.

We improved insulation reducing the amount of heat wasted during the winter .
Training days on green and environment issues are run regularly in the salon in collaboration with Ripe Avocado-ripeavocado.co.uk the consultancy company that it is helping us achieving our goals.

We have dramatically reduced product wastage by teaching all our Team to understand how much product to mix when doing colour and using the right technique when doing shampoos.

We have undertaken an industry first, by offsetting our carbon
footprint with the innovative and government approved Carbon
Retirement scheme. This scheme is unique, in that Carbon Retirement (www.carbonretirement.org) buys industrial pollution permits’ on our behalf and permanently removes them from the carbon trading system.
The salon is proud to support this scheme in the knowledge that it forces heavy polluters to reduce their emissions and incentives
investment in low carbon technology.

2011

100% of the electricity used in the salon now comes from a renewable source

We permanently removed and only use and recommend products made with natural ingredients and which exclude chemicals and harmful ingredients such as Parabens, Phthalates, DEA, Synthetic Colours, Paraffin and Formaldehyde.

I really believe in the responsibility we have as hairdressers and
business people to understand and implement changes that will
benefit our customers, and us as sector.
